Home energy usage
(Source: Building better homes for Canberra's climate, ACT Planning & Land Authority, June 2008)
This chart shows that the greatest single use of household energy consumption is for heating.
Strine Environments' designs virtually eliminate the need for this energy use, by the adoption of the four principles of good design:
- orientation
- thermal mass
- insulation
- glazing
The second highest usage is for hot water, which can be reduced dramatically by installing a solar hot water system, for which there is a federal government rebate (see http://www.environment.gov.au/settlements/renewable/solarhotwater/).
